Why I Built Hair GP
During the Covid pandemic, I developed telogen effluvium. Suddenly I wasn’t just the doctor — I was the patient. I understood for the first time what it actually feels like to watch your hair fall out and not know why. That experience changed everything about how I approach hair loss consultations.
I also have PCOS, so I understand on a personal level what hormonal disruption does to your body, your confidence, and your daily life. It’s not theoretical for me.
Around that time, I got the opportunity to train as a hair transplant surgeon, which deepened my understanding of hair science significantly. But it also showed me a gap that nobody seemed to be filling.
Women with hair loss were falling between the cracks. GPs couldn’t give them more than 10 minutes. Dermatologists specialise in skin and scalps, but not necessarily in the hormonal picture driving many women’s hair loss. And nobody was looking at these women as whole people — connecting the dots between their hormones, their nutrition, their stress, their history, and their hair.
I wanted to create what didn’t exist but should have: a dedicated, GP-led service where women get a full consultation with a doctor who understands both the medical and the hormonal side, who listens properly, and who treats hair loss as the medical issue it is.
Because women’s hair loss has been dismissed as “cosmetic” for far too long. It’s not cosmetic. It’s medical, it’s hormonal, and it deserves to be taken seriously.
That’s why Hair GP exists. I built it for women like me.

About Dr Amy
Dr Amy Vowler is the founder and Medical Director of Hair GP, London’s specialist doctor-led hair loss clinic for women.
With over a decade of experience as an NHS GP and hair restoration surgeon, Dr Amy combines the diagnostic rigour of general practice with advanced surgical and medical hair restoration techniques. She is one of a small number of doctors in the UK who can assess hormonal health, prescribe HRT, and deliver hair restoration treatments — all under one roof, without referrals back to an NHS GP.
Dr Amy graduated with honours in Medicine and Surgery from St George’s University of London in 2014, achieving Merit in both medical sciences and clinical sciences. Prior to medicine, she completed a BSc (Hons) in Zoology at Sheffield University in 2006, graduating with a 2:1. She gained her Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (FRCGP) in August 2019 and completed her GP training through the Kingston VTS Scheme, with placements at The Priory, Churchill Medical Practice, and Kingston Hospital.
In 2025, Dr Amy completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Hair Science and Trichology at the University of South Wales, graduating with Distinction. This formal academic qualification in trichology — combined with her medical degree and surgical training — gives her a depth of expertise in hair loss science that very few clinicians in the UK can match.
Her specialist training in hair restoration surgery includes mentorship under Professor Gambino, former head of the Italian Hair Restoration Society, and advanced surgical training through the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).
Dr Amy continues to practise as an NHS GP and runs a Youth Clinic for young people in Battersea. This ongoing general practice work keeps her at the forefront of holistic patient care and ensures she considers the full picture — hormonal, psychological, medical, and lifestyle factors — when treating hair loss.
