It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often. The honest answer has two parts — and for many women, the second part is good news.
Most private medical insurance treats hair loss as a cosmetic issue, so it won’t usually pay for the consultation. But if you have a Simplyhealth health cash plan, you can claim back the cost of your consultation with Dr Amy Vowler (GMC 7451097) — because she is GMC-registered and the clinic is CQC-registered, which are exactly the things a cash plan checks before it reimburses you.
At the time of writing, Simplyhealth is the only insurer we can confirm will reimburse our consultation fee. Cover varies between providers and plans, so it’s always worth checking your own policy — this page explains what to look for.
Hair loss consultation insurance: what’s actually covered
There are two different things people mean by “insurance,” and they work very differently:
- Private medical insurance (PMI) — Bupa, AXA Health, Vitality and similar. These plans generally exclude hair loss as cosmetic, especially female- and male-pattern (androgenetic) hair loss. Autoimmune types such as alopecia areata are sometimes covered for diagnosis with a GP referral, but it’s policy-dependent and never guaranteed.
- Health cash plans — Simplyhealth and similar. You pay a monthly premium and claim a portion of your everyday healthcare costs back, up to an annual limit. Specialist and diagnostic consultations are a standard benefit on most plans — which is where your appointment with Dr Amy fits.
So if a PMI insurer has told you hair loss isn’t covered, a cash plan may still get you money back. The two aren’t the same thing.
Get clarity before deciding
If you're tired of guessing what's causing your hair loss or whether treatment would help, a consultation gives you clear, medically grounded answers.
You'll leave knowing:
- What type of hair loss you have
- What's driving it
- Whether treatment would make a difference
- What your realistic options are
- What not to waste time on
How Simplyhealth covers your consultation
Health cash plans like Simplyhealth will reimburse a specialist or diagnostic consultation when two conditions are met:
- The clinician is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Dr Amy Vowler is a GMC-registered doctor (GMC 7451097) — you can verify any doctor on the GMC register.
- Your receipt clearly shows it was an initial or diagnostic consultation, names the clinician, and shows what you paid.
Our clinic is also CQC-registered (Care Quality Commission), meaning it’s independently regulated for safety and quality. That isn’t just reassurance for you — it’s the kind of credential that makes a claim straightforward to process.
You pay for your consultation as normal, then claim the cost back from Simplyhealth up to your plan’s annual limit (your “table of cover”). The exact amount you can reclaim depends on your plan level, so check your benefits before you book.

How to claim back your consultation cost
- Book and attend your consultation with Dr Amy.
- Take your itemised receipt. We provide an invoice that names Dr Amy, confirms it was an initial/diagnostic consultation, and shows the fee — everything Simplyhealth needs.
- Submit your claim through the Simplyhealth app or online portal, with the receipt attached.
- Get reimbursed up to your plan’s annual limit, usually within a few working days.
If you’re not sure whether your plan includes a consultations benefit, a quick call to Simplyhealth before your appointment will confirm it.
Does Bupa, AXA or Vitality cover hair loss consultations?
Usually not for pattern hair loss. AXA Health, Bupa and Vitality typically class hair loss treatment as cosmetic and exclude it. The main exception is autoimmune hair loss such as alopecia areata, where some plans cover diagnosis if your GP refers you. Terms differ between insurers and individual policies, so always check your own documents or call your provider — and ask specifically whether outpatient consultations are covered.
Why GMC and CQC registration matter
- GMC registration is the single thing a cash plan checks to approve a consultation claim. Dr Amy is on the register (GMC 7451097), so your consultation qualifies.
- CQC registration means the clinic meets independent national standards for safety and quality of care. It tells both you and your insurer that this is a properly regulated medical service — not a cosmetic salon.
Together they’re why a Simplyhealth claim for your consultation is clear-cut.

Most private medical insurers (Bupa, AXA, Vitality) treat hair loss as cosmetic and won’t pay for the consultation, particularly female- and male-pattern hair loss. Health cash plans such as Simplyhealth are different — they let you claim the cost back up to your plan’s limit. Always check your own policy.
Yes — Simplyhealth members can claim back the cost of a consultation with Dr Amy because she is GMC-registered (GMC 7451097) and the clinic is CQC-registered. You pay upfront and reclaim through the Simplyhealth app, up to your plan’s annual limit. Simplyhealth is currently the insurer we can confirm reimburses our consultation.
Health cash plans only reimburse consultations with a clinician on the General Medical Council register. Dr Amy Vowler is GMC-registered (GMC 7451097), so your consultation meets that requirement. You can verify any doctor on the GMC’s public register.
CQC (Care Quality Commission) registration means the clinic is independently regulated for safety and quality. It reassures you that this is a properly regulated medical service and helps your insurer process a consultation claim with confidence.
